Improving access to timely surgical care in Ghana by strengthening collaboration between traditional bone setters, public health workers, and hospitals.

Vincent Buckman is an MD/MBA candidate at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and Booth School of Business. Originally from Ghana, he is interested in health systems leadership and improving access to high-quality surgical care in underserved communities. His work spans community health, clinical research, healthcare innovation, and health equity. In Ghana, Vincent's primary work focuses on strengthening collaboration between traditional bone setters, public health workers, and the formal healthcare system. By cultivating partnerships across both informal and formal stakeholders, Vincent co-designed tailored training programs focused on infection prevention and early complication mapping. His leadership mobilized over 200 traditional bonesetters across multiple regions and reduced pediatric limb amputations by 30%. Through the Scholars program, Vincent aims to scale this model across two additional regions in Ghana as he explores approaches to securing government support and formalizing hospital referral pathways. For this expansion, the program's focus on pluralism and dialogue will help him design a strategy that integrates local traditions while interacting with national systems and leaders.
