Sojourner Truth
Obama Presidential Center Honoree

Space Name: Sojourner Truth Program Room | Forum | Lower Level | Democracy in Action Lab
Sojourner Truth, born Isabella Baumfree, escaped slavery and became one of the best-known abolitionists and women’s rights activists. Truth was a gifted speaker who used her voice to denounce slavery and sexism while challenging the power structures that denied human rights. Her advocacy inspired President Abraham Lincoln, and she contributed to reshaping the nation into a more free and just place with unwavering faith, strength, and spirit.

Meet More Honorees
Through the honoree naming initiative at the Obama Presidential Center, we are partnering with our donors to celebrate a part of the history in which the Obama story is so deeply rooted by associating a named space with a hero, moment, or person "on whose shoulders we stand"—an honoree who made the Obamas’ story possible.
