Still Holding the Scent of Flowers

Flowers and plants tell a story about renewal, care, and community. Inspired by the White House gardens maintained during the Obama administration, the work features magnolias, roses, tulips, apple blossoms, and edible plants rendered at an oversized scale. Their petals and leaves seem to burst across the wall, creating a sense of energy and celebration. The mural invites visitors to think about how ideas, communities, and institutions—like gardens—must be tended in order to flourish.

The artist

María Magdalena Campos-Pons is an artist born in Matanzas, Cuba, whose work draws on personal history, memory, and Afro-Cuban traditions. Often using herself and members of her family as subjects, she creates layered narratives that connect past and present through photography, installation, and mixed media.
