Devastating wildfires burning on Maui and the Hawaiʻi have killed at least 96 people, forced thousands to evacuate, and nearly destroyed the city of Lāhainā.
The wildfires, which officials say have now become the deadliest in modern U.S. history, began August 8. Hawaiʻi has declared a state of emergency Opens in a new tab . The unprecedented fires were fueled by a dry summer and strong winds fanned by Hurricane Dora. Experts say the fire and its impact has been intensified by climate change and fossil fuel use.
Our hearts go out to everyone affected—in this moment and in the weeks, months, and years ahead as communities rebuild.
President Obama shares a deep connection to Hawaiʻi, and like him, we are reassured and inspired by the power of people working together. All of us here at the Obama Foundation are moved by the way people are aiding their neighbors, the first responders at work on the ground, and all of those around the island who have come together to help those impacted.
Despite their heroic efforts, they still need your help! We put together a list of organizations providing urgent relief and essential services to the people affected by this natural disaster. We hope you’ll consider pitching in to help, no matter where you are.
