Teen Action Lab

Building the next generation of leaders through hands-on programs for teens in sports, wellness, and beyond. The Obama Foundation and After School Matters are partnering to bring hands-on youth programs to the Obama Presidential Center. We’ll create new opportunities for Chicago teens to build skills, explore interests, and grow as leaders. Through the Teen Action Lab, launching in summer 2026, youth from surrounding South Side communities can connect through experiences in athletics, wellness, and more.

A Shared Commitment to Chicago’s Youth

After School Matters, one of the nation’s largest and most impactful providers of after-school and summer program opportunities for teens, will serve as the Center’s signature youth programming partner. These collaborative programs will support teens’ growth, leadership, and well-being.

The programs are rooted in a shared belief: when young people have access to meaningful opportunities, supportive mentors, and spaces to belong, they can shape their futures — and their communities.

Sports & Well-Being

At Home Court , The Action Lab will focus on athletics and well-being, creating space for youth to gather, play, and stay active. After School Matters will lead the programs, offering opportunities to Chicago high school teens to explore their passions and develop their talents while gaining critical skills for work, college, and beyond.

What to Expect

In summer 2026, the partnership kicks off with two co-ed programs:

  • Basketball, Health & Wellness

Through this high‑energy co-ed basketball and wellness program, teens develop essential basketball skills while strengthening teamwork and leadership through group challenges and mindful movement.

  • Volleyball, Health & Wellness

Volleyball, Health & Wellness - In this program, teens develop essential techniques —serving, passing, setting, hitting—in a supportive and motivating environment that offers them the opportunity to grow as a player, an athlete, and a teammate.

Chicago teens interested in participating should submit a program interest form (Opens in a new tab) and attend an interview & enrollment event on April 28 or May 11. Programs begin in July 2026, and space is limited.

Registration for these two initial programs are open to Chicago high school teens aged 14-18   who live and/or attend school in the Washington Park, Woodlawn, and South Shore communities.

Looking Ahead

This is just the beginning of a growing suite of programs from After School Matters at the Obama Presidential Center. Our partnership will grow over time to include hands-on programs across culinary arts and creative disciplines. The Action Lab is designed to build everyday confidence and a lifetime of leadership skills.
