Sheldon Spotted Elk is the senior director of judicial and national engagement at Casey Family Programs, an organization focused on improving the well-being of children and families, especially those in the foster care system. Sheldon collaborates with legal officials to promote best practices in child welfare, including family preservation and reunification strategies. He also provides specialized training to 20 Indian Child Welfare Act courts to improve outcomes for Indian families. Sheldon, an alumnus of the University of New Mexico School of Law, has also taught adjunct courses and delivered lectures at law schools across the United States about improving the judicial system’s approach to child welfare. Sheldon is a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, one of the 574 tribal sovereign nations in the United States.
