The MBK Alliance’s new $1 million grant program is designed to provide communities with tools and resources to create safe spaces for our boys and young men of color, during the summer months, in an effort to curb the uptick in violence we are seeing across the country. The goal of the program is to help relieve the financial burden of the individuals and communities that are working hard to ensure the safety and success of our young men. Community-based 501(c)(3) organizations can apply for a $15,000, $20,000, or $25,000 Freedom Summer 2022 Fund grant. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and grants will be approved each week until all funding is in the hands of those committed to creating safe and engaging spaces for youth.

The Freedom Summer 2022 Fund is part of the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance’s broader Freedom Summer 2022 initiative. In June, the MBK Alliance issued a national call to action for communities to create safe spaces for boys and young men of color during the summer months. Freedom Summer 2022 is an opportunity for individuals, community organizers and organizations to develop creative ways to keep our children engaged and safe this summer.
Freedom Summer 2022 kicked off with a virtual town hall on Thursday, June 23, 2022. The Freedom Summer 2022 Town Hall was our way of assembling and unifying those ready to take action against youth violence. During the town hall, we discussed the impetus, importance, and purpose of Freedom Summer 2022.
In addition, attendees met a panel of young men committed to leading the charge of reducing violence in their communities and will learn more about a model community organization, which consistently and effectively meets the needs of its youth. Watch the full town hall below!
We know our MBK Communities work tirelessly to ensure our boys and young men of color are protected and supported. If you have developed innovative ways to engage boys and young men of color this summer, we want to hear from you! We’ve created a social media toolkit to serve as an engagement resource guide for communities taking part in Freedom Summer 2022. We looked forward to seeing and sharing the stories of those whose lives have been transformed by the unrelenting work of community mobilizers like you!
