About the Applicant

Founded in 1980 with a handful of neighborhood children, South Shore Drill Team now serves 300 young people, ages 8-21, who perform at more than 100 events annually. South Shore Drill Team uses the performing arts to engage urban youth throughout their critical teenage years, mitigate the dangers of drugs and violence, and guide members toward completing their education and becoming responsible citizens. For 38 years, the team has operated in areas of high need on the City’s South ide, providing opportunity for young people from low-income families. The organization accepts referrals of court-involved youth and effectively helps them turn their lives around.

About the Project

The South Shore Drill Team: Igniting Performance & Promise Program will reduce violence by offering a schedule of activities for an additional 60 young people, including 30 referrals from Cook County Juvenile Court with the outcome of reducing risky behavior and limiting exposure to random violence while improving life skills. The key programmatic components include: performing arts training, monitoring school progress, teaching evidence-based restorative justice principles, and delivering cognitive behavioral therapy. South Shore Drill Team has demonstrated its ability to retain boys and young men of color, which is the key to having meaningful impact on young lives.
