About the Applicant

Founded in 1996, the Orlando Community & Youth Trust leverages grant and philanthropic dollars to enhance the quality of life of Orlando’s youth and families. Ninety percent of the Trust’s revenues are invested in after school, academic, cultural arts, youth employment, and health and wellness programs serving children and youth residing in Orlando’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods. The remainder is invested in environmental programs, including the acquisition and improvement of public parks and the planting of trees.

About the Project

The Trust will begin integrating an evidence-based mentoring program called iMentor into the City’s existing youth-serving infrastructure, starting at four pilot locations that will reach 350 boys and young men of color by year two of the project. Research shows that the iMentor model increases the likelihood an at-risk young person will attend college by 29 percent. The program will implement a robust mentor recruitment campaign, evidence-based training of mentors, utilization of tested mentor-mentee matching tools, and ongoing support for mentors and the mentor-mentee relationship.

All staff hired through the program will be trained in evidence-based mentoring with technical assistance provided by Mentor.org, an MBK Alliance partner. As part of the program an outreach team will be hired, comprised of three outreach workers at the pilot locations. The workers will serve as liaisons between the MBK Coordinator and mentors and mentees and support parents and guardians of youth participants. Outreach team members will welcome new mentors while monitoring expectations for appropriate interactions with mentees. They will complete all forms for MBK mentor credentialing, including the six standards of The Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring.
