About the Applicant

Since 1969, Broader Urban Involvement and Leadership Development (BUILD), Inc. has worked in some of Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods giving youth alternatives to the violence that takes away their positive potential. BUILD’s mission is to engage youth in the schools and on the streets so they can realize their educational and career potential and contribute to the stability, safety, and well-being of our communities.

About the Project

The Apprentice Mentor Program is a pilot project that adapts BUILD’s nationally recognized model to prepare boys and young men of color to become the next generation of mentors for Chicago’s youth. This Program will recruit ten apprentice mentors from BUILD’s at-risk justice-involved youth participants and train them to become mentors for their younger peers. As mentors, they will be positive role models for their peers and help them solve problems they face in their homes, schools, and communities.

Mentors will also gain an opportunity to earn an income while developing skills, knowledge, and attitudes that can reshape their expectations for future success. The Program design updates BUILD’s model with credible messenger peer mentoring best practices. BUILD’s model has earned national recognition, including being designated as an Innovative Practice by the U.S. Department of Education and an evidence-based Effective Program by the U.S. Department of Justice.
